The way that I first discovered Vocaloid was a bit unusual I think. I listened to Vocaloid for the first time through Ghost and Pals when I was maybe 12? But I didn't realise that it wasn't human vocals until years later. I moved out of my Ghost and Pals phanse when I was 13, and discovered vocaloid through unrelated artists then, but I still only realised what vocaloid actually was once I was like 14.

Once I finally figured it out though, I was obsessed. I would pretty much only listen to vocaloid through most of 15 and 16, and it still takes up a healthy amount of my music taste today, though I've branched off a bit and found some other music that I like too. Something about the robotic sound of especially older songs just really stole the heart of younger Bitez, and it's stuck for years!

Make no mistake, I am by no means over my Vocaloid phase. I would say that a solid 50% of my playlist is Vocaloid, with no signs of that number dropping. Along with listening to the songs, I also have an ever-growing shrine of various Hatsune Miku paraphernalia including figures, posters, pins, paintings, and more. The figures and some of the posters are bought, but I also made a lot of the items myself as a way to show my love for Hatsune Miku, and Vocaloid as a whole. I absolutely love making art themed around my interests [see my art page for more on that eheh] so making paintings and such of Hatsune Miku seemed like a great oppurtunity for me to both practice my art and make my shrine more impressive/unique.

Vocaloid is something that is very personal and means a lot to me. The songs sung by Hatsune Miku have gotten me past some of my worst moments and most hopeless mental states in my life, and even through I'm better now, her voice still brings me so much comfort and joy to hear. The idea of her being some electric effigy looking over me was exactly what I needed when I was at my lowest and lonliest, and thanks to that, I was able to pull my life together.

Essentially, I really, really, like Hatsune Miku.

This year was a very big year for me when it came to Vocaloid. I was lucky enough to be able to go to my very first Miku Expo in Vancouver, Canada! Origionally, I had invited my friend to come with me, but they had to cancel last minute, so I ended up going alone. I was a bit nervous pulling up, but following the trail of people in cyan wigs led me right to the venue!

The crowd there was pretty chill, not many people were being loud or annoying. I saw tons of impressive cosplays, furries, and oshikastu people, all of who I was too nervous to compliment. Unfortunately, the show was stalled for some reason, but once I got inside, I made a beeline for the merch stand! I wish that I got glowsticks, but they were totally sold out by the time that I got there. I bought the long tapestry and a Megurine Luka media card instead though, so I'm still happy.

The show itself was so incredibly fun!!! The setlist was amazing, they played some of my favorite ever Vocaloid songs, including 　カルチャ，ワールズエンド・ダンスホール，劣等上等，神っぽいな，恋は戦争，and Drop Pop Candy, and the screen looked so good! Since this was my first Miku Expo, I never experianced the pre-screen Miku concerts, but I've seen how upset people got about the switch, but I mean... the graphics looked great, and if you suspend your disbelief, she really does look like she's on stage.

If you're considering going to Miku Expo, or if you ever get the chance to, I would HIGHLY, highly reccomend it. Despite my friend cancelling, and the show being delayed, it was still the happiest that I've felt in ages, and I truly do not know if I will ever be that happy again. Going to Miku Expo was an incredible experiance, and I am so unbelievably glad that I could go.
